Climate Change: meeting the challenge.

Climate change is one of the most serious challenges facing our world. The choices we all make every day affect the planet we will entrust to future generations. Stagecoach Group is helping protect our environment by encouraging people to reduce car use and get on board smarter, greener public transport. And we are also working hard to reduce our own carbon footprint.

Public transport is key to the future of our communities. As well as making a major contribution to social inclusion and the quality of life in our towns and cities, bus, coach, rail and tram services are an important part of the solution to the global challenge of climate change.

Environment Policy

Greener, smarter travel on buses and trains is an important part of the solution to the global challenge of climate change, but any form of transport has an impact on the environment. We are committed to making our own business as sustainable as possible. Our Environment Policy sets out our commitment to good environmental stewardship through a package of measures to reduce emissions, cut water and energy consumption, minimise waste and promote recycling.

Public transport: part of the solution

Carbon Emissions (gCo2 per km) (TBC) : Car: 209.5, Bus: 89.1, Train: 60.2 UK transport sector carbon emissions by made (TBC) : Car: 54%, Bus: 3%, Train: 2%

Climate change is one of the most serious challenges facing our world. The choices we all make every day, including how we get to work and the way we travel on holiday, affect the planet we will entrust to future generations.

Government studies such as the Stern Review and the Eddington Report have made clear that emissions from transport are growing. They also show that we can achieve significant economic and social benefits from more environmentally sustainable ways of living.

Public transport is an important part of the solution. Buses and trains produce significantly less carbon emissions per passenger than the car. We can help protect the environment by encouraging people to make less use of the car and domestic airlines, and get on board public transport as much as possible.

Research by Stagecoach has confirmed that environmental concerns are increasingly driving customer behaviour. We believe this represents a significant opportunity and we are actively marketing our greener smarter travel services to our customers, working with local authorities and the Government to encourage intelligent car use.

As a leading international business, Stagecoach Group recognises that any form of transport has an impact on the environment. For many years, we have had a published environmental policy that sets out our commitment to good environmental stewardship, as well as setting targets for improvement.

Stagecoach Group’s wide-ranging strategy includes investment in renewable fuels and cleaner engines, state–of–the–art energy efficient facilities, water and waste recycling initiatives and offering businesses green travel incentives for their employees.

Now, more than ever, we are taking seriously our responsibility to reduce our own carbon footprint and we are currently in the process of updating our climate change strategy. Our new Carbon Management Programme will put in place new processes, key performance indicators and targets. We will also ensure we share best practice across our divisions as part of our plan for a greener planet.
